Widely recognized as an international caliber training facility, Sandstone has played host to numerous major events and was designated as the quarantine site for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Equestrian team. A longtime friend and colleague of Mark Bone, Gaby teaches privately at Sandstone and attends numerous international competitions in both North America and Europe. After the birth of her daughter, she is looking forward to getting back in the ring and introducing young riders and amateur riders to the excitement of international competition.

After sensing that it was difficult for some clients to make it to the Hidden Valley barn on a regular basis, Mark Bone saw a wonderful opportunity in the Parzick’s property.

“Offering personalized training for amateur and junior riders continues to be my top priority,” comments Bone. “The additional location allows us to take on a few more horses and riders, while maintaining our boutique-style show barn atmosphere that everyone has grown to love at Hidden Valley.”

For Artes and students, the summer began close to home in San Juan Capistrano, California, at the Oaks Blenheim June Series of shows. At the Oaks Blenheim June Classic I, Artes and Presto B dazzled the crowd with their speed and seemingly effortless jumping to finish in second place in the $30,000 Oaks Classic Grand Prix. Presto B, owned by Alix Fargo, an enthusiastic supporter of high performance show jumping, has been a long time Grand Prix mount for Artes.

At the Oaks Blenheim June Classic III, Artes returned to the Oaks Blenheim Grand Prix field for the $30,000 Copa de Amistad Grand Prix. Artes rode the 12-year-old Zweibrucker gelding, Felix 380, to a clean round and a very respectable sixth place finish in the class. Felix 380 is owned by Alix Fargo.

A few weeks later, at the Oaks Blenheim Red, White and Blue Classic, consistency proved key for Artes as she came away with a sixth place ribbon on Presto B, and an eleventh place on Felix 380 in the $25,000 Red, White and Blue Grand Prix. Artes’s students, Sophie Benjamin, Victoria Hobbs and Gretchen Privett also excelled at the same show in their respective divisions.

The action continued in August as horses and riders traveled to Parker, Colorado, for the Colorado Horse Park Summer Circuit. At the Rocky Mountain Classic, Artes rode to a fourth place finish aboard Presto B in the $40,000 Rocky Mountain Grand Prix. The following week at the Colorado Summer Classic, the pair continued to bring in the ribbons including a sixth place in the $60,000 Grand Prix of Denver. Artes was impressed with the overall performance of Presto B in the big class.

Sophie Benjamin once again impressed as she added to her resume this summer with big accomplishments in the hunter and jumper rings. At the Colorado Summer Classic, the eighteen-year-old from Rancho Santa Fe, California, hand galloped to a big win in the two-round, $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. Riding Sir Neel, owned by Inspiration Farms, LLC, she received a perfect score of ten bonus points in the final round to claim the prestigious hunter competition. The pair also won every class they entered in Colorado, including the Washington International Equitation Classic, USEF Medal and USEF Show Jumping Talent Search. Benjamin leases Sir Neel from barn-mate Victoria Hobbs and plans to compete with horse in the equitation and medal finals.

Benjamin also competed as a member of the Zone 10 Young Riders Team at the 2008 CN FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North. Her rides aboard Marga, owned by Beacon Hill Partners, helped Zone 10 to secure the team gold medal. She also qualified for the individual championships where she finished eleventh among an outstanding group of talented young riders.

In August, riders returned to California to compete at the Blenheim EquiSports series of summer shows at the Del Mar Horsepark where amateur rider, Victoria Hobbs, had her share of ribbons with her young, up-and-coming jumpers. At the Showpark All Seasons Summer Classic (August 27-31), Hobbs’s youngest jumper, Grand Noir, won the 2008 Young Jumper Championship in the Five-Year-Old Division. Ridden by Susan Artes, Grand Noir’s win was preceded by blue, red and yellow ribbons the Colorado Summer Classic, Rocky Mountain Classic and the Showpark Summer Classic in August. Victoria Hobbs also rode her own Nicolas to high placings in the CPHA Junior/Adult, USEF Adult and Ariat Adult medals.

Susan Artes Stables focuses on the hunter, jumper and equitation disciplines and is currently accepting a limited number of students and horses. Located at Middle Ranch, the full-service show barn maintains an active horse show calendar that includes AA shows in Southern California as well as in select shows on the West Coast and Canada.
